Swing coordination - patterns for snare and bass drum
When a jazz drummer plays, he or she supports the music by playing what you might refer to as "rhythmic melodies" underneath and/or integrated with the ride cymbal beat.
You are not supposed to play repeated patterns as in pop or rock drumming (although you might), but instead try to build constantly evolving thematic melodies.
Listen to some of the great jazz drummers to get the hang of it.
Play the basic swing beat and add these rhythms.
Variations:
A. Play on snare drum
B. Play on bass drum
C. Play alternate notes on sd and bd.
D. Play 2 notes on sd and 2 notes on bd.
