Two methods for creating fills

In lesson 15  you could learn how to orchestrate a rhythm on the kit.Now let's look at a some other methods for making up fills!

1. Add a rhythm to a movement

Use a combination of instruments and add a rhythm.

Moving between snare and tom:

Use your own rhythms and instrument combinations!

2. Sequences

Play a short phrase  - for example:

That is 3 x 2 = six 16:th notes.

Play this phrase twice (= 12 notes). Since each measure contains 16 16:th notes, you have to add 4 16:th notes to complete it.

If you play these 4 notes in a similar pattern, you get something like this:

Add accents to give it a little "oomph":

A new phrase: Three 16:th notes on snare:

When you repeat this phrase you play alternating left and right hand accents!

You can fit 5 of these into one measure (5 x 3 =15). Add a single 16:th note.

Orchestrate!
Here, the accents (= the start of the phrase) are played on snare and the other notes on toms.

The same phrase, but: snare (left hand) - bass drum - tom (right hand).

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Another new phrase. This time 5 16:th notes in length.

Alternating accents again!
3 x 5 notes,  add 1 = 16 notes, equals one 4/4 bar

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Orchestrate!
Last note in the sequence on bass drum!
Added note on snare drum!

Here is an excercise containing a combination of these two methods

Play two notes on snare and one on bass drum. First as 8:th note triplets (3 notes per beat).

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Played twice the rate, you get 16:th note triplets.

Looks like this(6 note per beat):

Or like this (check out the orchestration!):

Play the same phrase as 16:th notes!

Thats 5 times through plus one single note (15+1)!

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Same thing, but start with bass drum:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

As 16:th notes:
