Hihat and ride ideas

Hihat and ride cymbal of course are two different instruments with different sound and various expressional possibilities.
However - the two instruments have the same basic function (and occupy the same place in the note system)

One possibility you have is to combine them rather than play one or the other. Use these excercises as an inspirational source.
Think about these beats as templates to work from.

The ride cymbal is notated normally here, but the hihat notes are writter one step lower than usual to separate them.

Paradiddle between ride and hihat

Split the paradiddle between ride and hihat, just as you did between hihat and snare in lesson 12

For whom the bell tolls

Lets look at the ride bell. The "triangled" note means that you play the bell of the ride. The other notes are played normally (that's called the bow of the cymbal ).

Play with the shoulder of the stick (about 3" from the tip) on the side of the bell facing the rest of the kit - that's left side if you're right handed. This is ideal for using the Moeller technique!
